Parylene FAQ

Find answers to common parylene questions below

Is parylene biocompatible and implantable?

Parylene is ISO 10993 approved for use as a medical biocompatible and implantable material.

Is parylene fully submersible and waterproof?

Yes, but the level of protection depends on coating thickness and usage.

Is parylene hydrophobic or hydrophilic?

Parylene is hydrophobic.

Does parylene require catalysts, cure agents, solvents or plasticizers of any kind?

No, parylene is a chemically pure coating.

Does parylene require curing?

Parylene does not require curing of any kind.

Does the parylene coating process degrade or distort the underlying substrate?

Parylene deposits onto parts without external stress of any kind.

Does parylene offer conformability to highly variable surface geometries?

Yes, parylene is 100% conformal.

Are parylene coatings free of voids and pinholes?

Parylene is free of voids and pinholes at a few microns thickness.

Does parylene add weight or bulk onto coated parts?

Parylene’s micron-thin film does adds nearly zero mass.

Does parylene adhere to any substrate?

Parylene has excellent adhesion to most substrates.

Does parylene withstand the effects of sterilization processes?

Parylene withstands most sterilization processes.

Is parylene repairable?

Yes, parylene can be mechanically removed and reprocessed for repair.

Is it possible to coat over an existing parylene layer with a new parylene layer?

Yes. However, coating in this way creates two separate parylene layers and not one homogeneous layer.

How deep of vacuum is needed to vaporize the Parylene?

5-50mTorr.

Is parylene UL94V-0 approved?

Yes.

How many parts can be coated in one machine?

The answer depends on the size of the boards. Parylene coating happens inside a physical coating chamber that is fixed in size.

Does your equipment have the capability of “tumbling” small parts?

Yes.
